The Therapy Process

We get it: Starting this process can be daunting, but we mean it when we say we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Whether you’ve never been to therapy before or you’re familiar and need a tune-up (we know healing isn’t linear!), here’s what you can expect when working together:

  • To get started, simply fill out a form to request a 15-minute consultation call with your prospective therapist.

Having a strong client-therapist fit has an immense impact on the effectiveness of therapy, so these calls (video or phone - your preference!) are for you and intended to help you get to know your therapist, ask questions about the process, and share a bit about what you’re looking for.

After your call, your prospective therapist will send you an email, and if it feels like a good fit, you can schedule your first session!

  • Usually around 1-2 hours, your first session is longer than regular sessions, allowing your therapist to get to know you as a person and better understand your past, present, and desired future. Your therapist will guide you through this part by asking a lot of questions.

We are grounded in curiosity and recognize that openness comes differently for everyone, so we do our best to make sure this part feels conversational as we get to know each other.

  • Typically 50-minute, weekly appointments - though frequency may change depending on your needs or your therapist’s availability.

Often referred to as “The Work,” we like to think of these sessions as where the healing really happens. We’ll use a personalized approach and work together to set goals and make a treatment plan.

We want to support making your mental health a priority, so we recommend picking a consistent date/time for your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Transparency is important to us. If you have questions you don’t see here, we’d be happy to answer them for you. Contact us via form or email, and we’ll be in touch before you know it.

  • We accept payment via debit or credit card, and HSA or FSA card, at the beginning of each session.

This allows us to focus on you for the remainder of your session.

Please note that neither your therapist nor KMTS will be responsible for any overdraft fees, bounced/check fees, or other fees from your bank.

  • Make sure to ask your insurance provider if you have out of network benefits.

If so, your therapist can provide you with what's called a "Superbill" at the end of each month (or as requested), which functions as a receipt that you can submit to your insurance company so that it may go towards your out-of-network deductible or for possible reimbursement. It will contain a summary of all the payments you’ve made to KMTS for that month.

  • You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

  • Consistent attendance greatly contributes to a successful outcome, and we are happy to accommodate rescheduling and cancellations with at least 48 hours advance notice.

Because your session time is reserved solely for you, if you need to cancel or reschedule your session less than 48 hours before your session, there will be a 50% session fee (barring emergencies or if this is your first time canceling).

If you are beyond 20 minutes late for your session (“no show”), or miss the session entirely, you are still responsible for full payment of the session.

Please understand that your insurance company will not pay or reimburse for missed or canceled sessions.
